Hands gently working with garden soil and seedlings, wearing gloves

A decade of dirty hands and honest notes

Garden Reads began in a backyard in Portland, Oregon, where Clara Winters was learning the hard way that most garden books are written for people with more time, space, and money than the average home gardener. She'd follow a pruning guide, and her roses would look worse. She'd try a "simple" compost system, and it would attract rats.

So she started keeping a garden journal. What worked. What failed. What she'd do differently. Over ten years, that journal grew into a stack of notebooks, and those notebooks turned into The Well-Kept Garden — the book she wished had existed when she started.

Today, Garden Reads is a small independent publisher focused on one thing: practical, honest, beautifully illustrated garden guides. We test every technique in real gardens, not demonstration plots. If it doesn't work in a normal backyard, it doesn't go in the book.

Our philosophy

Good gardening isn't about perfection. It's about showing up, paying attention, and learning as you go. Our books are here to help — not to make you feel like you're doing it wrong.

Independently published, reader-funded

Garden Reads is reader-supported. We don't run ads, accept sponsored content, or sell reader data. Our books are funded entirely by the people who buy them.
